Everybody knows of or heard of the Costume & mask carnival in Venice, which takes place in February every year. Little is known though (unless you were born in Italy or live there), that February is the month of the “carnevale” all over Italy.
Porlezza is no different and every year the town puts on a magnificent show with floats and music and lots of happy colorfully dressed people.
The floats are a serious business! Each group invests a lot of time, effort and creativity into creating the perfect float, coordinating the dances and songs and preparing for the march around town. Whether you’re watching a group of 3 years old toddlers and their kindergarten teachers, or an elderly band, or flag bearers…. You are guaranteed to experience something you never have before.
The air is literally awash with emotions. Even if you don’t understand Italian and you come from a different land and culture, you can’t help but getting emotional with each parade, with each mother encouraging her child up on the float to dance, with each toddler in the street showing off the cutest costumes.
The main feeling is that of a community that has truly come together to celebrate their holiday.
It is an amazing experience and since February is also not high season, accommodation in Porlezza is pretty easy to find and a lot more affordable.
We highly recommend a winter visit to this wonderland.
